If you’re the proud owner of an electric vehicle (EV), or you’re considering switching from gas to electric, you know that EVs require charging. Are all electric car chargers the same? Yes, but their charging speeds vary. The good news is that electric chargers are universal; you don’t have to buy a new charger if you buy a new EV (unless it’s a Tesla). There are some differences between the types of chargers available. Mercedes-Benz Newmarket is here to break down the differences between the three main types of EV chargers: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3.
Aurora EV owners will have access to all three types of car chargers: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. The main difference between these chargers is the speed at which they can charge an EV battery.
Level 1 chargers have a charging speed of about 5 to 8 kilometres per hour. It uses a regular 120-volt household outlet, so it’s a good choice for EVs with small batteries or for overnight charging. You wouldn’t use a Level 1 charger while on the road, because it’s the slowest type of EV charger. It can take 24+ hours to fully charge an EV battery using a Level 1 charger.
Level 2 charging can add 19 to 129 kilometres to your EV’s battery per hour. This type of charger can be found at public charging stations or installed in your home. Installing a Level 2 charger in your home is a fantastic way to keep your EV’s battery topped up and ready for your daily commute.
Level 3 charging is the fastest type of charger available. It can add anywhere from 5 to 32 kilometres of range per minute. Level 3 chargers can only be found at public charging stations, because they utilize a much higher voltage level. These chargers are great if you’re running errands around Toronto and need a quick boost.
The different types of electric car chargers all serve their own purposes and make charging much easier for drivers whether they’re at home or on the go.
